BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION – LUSAKA CLEANUP

Tackling Plastic Waste at the Source

Date and Time

March 7, 2026

7:30 am – 1:00 pm

Location

Lusaka, Zambia

♵ 🌟 Beat Plastic Pollution!🌟 ♵

🌊 On March 07th, 2026, join us in Lusaka, Zambia, by the Great East Road – Waterfalls Mall Roundabout area for a hands-on cleanup event to #BeatPlasticPollution. Hosted in collaboration with Mizu Eco Care and GMFER.

📍 Meet up point: Waterfalls Mall (Great East Road Roundabout)

🎒 What to bring:
– Your own reusable water bottle (drinking water provided!)
– Gloves if you have them
– Energy, enthusiasm, and friends

Why this matters:
– Streams feed rivers. Rivers rush to our mighty oceans. Every piece of plastic that slips into a drain or ditch today is destined to choke the seas tomorrow.
– Right here in Lusaka, the Ngwerere River and countless other waterways carry the scars of our city’s habits — plastic bags, bottles, wrappers, and fragments from our streets, markets, and neighborhoods. They pile up, block flows, strangle ecosystems, and poison wildlife.
– But we can stop it at the source.
– Every bag lifted from a drain, every bottle pulled from the roadside, is one less piece invading our rivers and riparian zones. This cleanup is our direct action — reclaiming our city, protecting our waterways, and breaking the chain before it reaches the ocean.

Join us. Hand in hand, we turn the tide.

February 27, 2026

9:00 am –

Location

Koru Camp, Greater Kruger, South Africa

🌟 What to Know

🏕️ GMFER is excited about our upcoming Mambas in the Park two-day campout on Friday, February 27th. It will take place in KORU Camp located in the greater Kruger biosphere. Campouts feature multiple workshops and game drives centered on conservation and community. The theme for this weekend will focus on Pangolins, their habitats and the danger they face as a critically endangered species and the most trafficked animal in the world.

🐘 Mambas in the Park is a joint collaboration between GMFER and the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit/Transfrontier Afirca. GMFER sponsors and organizes these monthly campouts with the Mambas and their children and their extended family from the Hluvukani village in rural South Africa.

Mambas in the Park – August 2025

August 23, 2025

Date and Time

August 23, 2025

9:00 am – 6:00 pm

Location

Greater Kruger, South Africa

🌟 What to Know

🦁 In partnership with Transfrontier Africa, the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit, and GMFER, we host immersive trips and workshops with the Mambas and their children in the Greater Kruger region.

🐦 Although the Mambas dedicate their lives to protecting wildlife, many of their children and families have never witnessed the beauty of elephants, rhinos, or lions in their natural habitat. To ensure African voices champion Africa’s wild wonders, we must bridge the cultural and economic divide that keeps communities disconnected from their own natural heritage.

🐘 These experiences combine conservation education with community engagement. Each campout carries a special theme, highlighting the distinct beauty, fragility, and ecological value of a particular species or addressing global challenges such as climate change or plastic pollution.

Zambia: Beat Plastic Pollution

September 12th, 2025

Date and Time

September 12, 2025

7:30 am – 12:30 pm

Location

Kalimba Ngwerere River bridge, Lusaka, Zambia

♵ 🌟 Beat Plastic Pollution!🌟 ♵

🌊 On September 12th, 2025, join us in Lusaka, Zambia, by the Ngwerere Stream for a hands-on cleanup event to #BeatPlasticPollution. Hosted in collaboration with Mizu Eco Care, GMFER, and others, this community effort builds on previous cleanups and will continue every two months at the same location.

🗑️ Plastic pollution is one of the most urgent environmental issues in Zambia’s urban centres. Waste carried through city drainage systems ends up in the Ngwerere River, travelling downstream to the Chongwe and ultimately the Zambezi River. Along the way, it clogs waterways, threatens biodiversity, and disrupts the natural services these river ecosystems provide to local communities.

🌱 This cleanup aims to remove harmful waste, restore the health of the Ngwerere, and protect the interconnected rivers it feeds. Participants will help prevent further degradation, support vital habitats, and contribute to a cleaner, healthier future for both people and wildlife.

📍 Meet up point: Catholic church opposite Ellensdale School.

👕 Please dress appropriately: field work attire with gum boots and (if you have them) gloves are required.

Sri-Lanka: Lime Tree as Bio-Fence MItigating HEC Monitoring Progress

Septembert 2025

Date and Time

September 1, 2025

8:00 am – 6:00 pm

Location

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

🌳 In partnership with GMFER and Rare Sri Lanka, the Elephant Human Coexistence Foundation is leading a pilot project in Sri Lanka to explore the use of Lime Tree Bio Fencing as a natural solution to Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC).

🐘 Human-Elephant Conflict poses serious challenges for rural farming communities, with elephants damaging crops and livelihoods. By planting Sri Lankan lime trees along field boundaries, the project seeks to create a protective, non-lethal barrier—reducing conflict while encouraging peaceful coexistence between people and elephants.

🌱 This pilot focuses on monitoring the growth, effectiveness, and community acceptance of lime bio fences. The aim is to assess their potential to safeguard harvests, protect elephant habitats, and promote sustainable, nature-based solutions that benefit both humans and wildlife.

Mambas in the Park July 2025

July 26, 2025

Date and Time

July 26, 2025

9:00 am – 6:00 pm

Location

Greater Kruger, South Africa

🌟 Event Highlights

🦁 Together with Transfrontier Africa, the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit, and GMFER, we create unique opportunities for the Mambas and their children to take part in trips and workshops across the Greater Kruger.

🐦 While the Mambas work tirelessly to safeguard wildlife, many of their own children and loved ones have never had the chance to see elephants, rhinos, or lions roaming free. For Africa’s people to speak for its wild treasures, the barriers of both cultural and economy that separate communities from their natural heritage must be broken down.

🐘 Each trip and workshop blends conservation awareness with community connection. Campouts are designed around specific themes, showcasing the rarity, vulnerability, and ecological importance of a chosen species, or tackling global issues like climate change and plastic waste.

🌟 Here’s what you should know:

🦁 In collaboration with Transfrontier Africa, the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit and KORU camp, GMFER organizes and sponsors monthly campouts and workshops with the Mambas and their children in the Greater Kruger.

🐦 Despite the significance of their work, the Mambas’ own children and families rarely experience the wonder of seeing an elephant, a rhino, or a lion in the wild. If African voices are to rise on behalf of Africa’s wild wonder, the cultural and economic distance that separates Africa’s people from the continent’s wild heritage must be dismantled.

🐘 The 2–3-night campout features multiple workshops centered on conservation and community. Each campout is themed to amplify the uniqueness, vulnerability and ecological significance of a specific species or a phenomenon that has global impact such as climate change or plastic pollution.
